Mahogany Front Door Styles Compared: Arched, Classic 4 Lite, 6 Lite, Craftsman, Prairie and Modern
Once you've decided on a wood front door, the next question is the lite pattern: how the glass is laid out in the door. The pattern does more than set the style. It decides how much daylight reaches your entry, how much privacy you keep, and how much finishing and cleaning the door will need. Here's a side-by-side look at the mahogany styles our customers choose most, so you can match one to your home.
What All of These Doors Have in Common
Every style below is a prehung, solid core mahogany entry door that arrives unfinished, ready for stain, paint or a clear coat. Doors are 1-3/4 in. thick and come standard with a double bore, and most list a 4-9/16 in. jamb. You choose left- or right-hand inswing and a hinge finish (satin nickel, oil rubbed bronze or black on most models). The differences are in the glass and the height.
Arched 6 Lite (8 ft)
Our best-selling style. The arched top on a full 8 ft door adds height and a classic, Spanish- or Mediterranean-friendly look that's very popular in Texas. The 3/0x8/0 Mahogany Door, Arched 6 Lite measures 37 3/4 x 98 in. overall with the frame and comes with clear or Water Cubic tempered glass.

Best for: tall entries, traditional, Mediterranean and Hill Country homes. It also comes as a 6/0x8/0 double for wide openings.
Classic 4 Lite
A balanced, timeless design for standard 6 ft 8 in. openings, and one of our most popular single doors. The 3 ft x 6 ft 8 in. Mahogany Classic 4 Lite Prehung Door lists a 37 3/4 x 82 3/4 in. overall size and a 2-3/8 in. backset.

Best for: transitional and traditional homes where you want plenty of glass without a busy grid.
6 Lite
Six lites in a grid give a crisp, traditional look and let in lots of light. The 3/0x8/0 Mahogany Prehung Door with 6 Lites has a solid pine core with okoume mahogany veneer, an included stain-grade okoume frame, and clear or Water Cubic glass.

Best for: colonial, farmhouse and ranch homes.
Craftsman 6 Lite With Shelf
Glass in the top section, a small decorative shelf (dentil shelf) below it, and panels underneath give the classic Craftsman look. Because the glass sits high, you keep more privacy at eye level when seated inside. See the Craftsman 6 Lite 3/0x6/8 Mahogany Prehung Door with Shelf.

Best for: bungalows and Craftsman homes, and anyone who wants light without a full-glass door.
Prairie (9 Marginal Lites)
A large center glass area framed by narrow "marginal" lites around the edge. The look is architectural and a little Frank Lloyd Wright. The Prairie 3/0x6/8 Mahogany Prehung Front Door uses clear beveled tempered glass. It's also offered as a 5/9 unit with sidelites.
Best for: Prairie, Craftsman and transitional homes.
Modern 4 Lite
Four horizontal lites stacked down the door make for a clean, contemporary look. On the 3/0x6/8 Mahogany Prehung Door, Modern 4 Lite, each lite is 23 1/2 x 11 in., and you can choose clear or frosted glass.

Best for: modern, mid-century and modern-farmhouse homes. It looks especially sharp stained a warm mid-tone.

How the Lite Pattern Affects Upkeep
More divided lites mean more wood-to-glass edges to finish and keep sealed. When you finish your door, take your time around every muntin and glass bead. A covered porch or overhang will make any finish last longer. For care tips, see How to Protect Wood Doors from Texas Heat and Humidity.
Choosing Glass for Privacy
If your door faces the street, a textured glass such as Water Cubic or Frost (offered on many of these models) lets in light while blurring the view inside. Clear glass is best for shaded or set-back entries.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "lite" mean on a front door?
A lite is a single pane or section of glass. A "6 lite" door has six glass sections divided by wood muntins.
Which mahogany door style lets in the most light?
Full-glass designs like the Arched 6 Lite, 6 Lite, Classic 4 Lite and Prairie let in the most daylight. The Craftsman with shelf keeps glass to the upper section.
Do these mahogany doors come stained?
No. They arrive unfinished, so you can stain, paint or clear coat them to match your home. Finish the door promptly to protect the wood.
Is an 8 ft front door worth it?
If your ceiling or porch is 9 ft or taller, an 8 ft door usually looks more in proportion and makes the entry feel grander. In a standard 8 ft wall, a 6/8 door is the norm.
Can I get the same style as a double door?
Several of these styles come as doubles. Examples include the 6/0x8/0 Arched 6 Lite double and the 6/0x6/8 4 Lite double. Check the doors with sidelights collection for sidelite versions too.
